The neuralgic center of Mexico City is, without a doubt, the Zocalo. This is where the great Tenochtitlan was born 700 years ago as a well-designed metropolis, embraced by a lake, and whose imprint extended over a large part of the territory we now call Mexico. This immense square and the streets that surround it are the epicenter of numerous cultural, social, political and artistic manifestations. On its perimeter stand some emblematic buildings that have marked a milestone in the city’s history since the XIV century: to the east is the National Palace; to the north, the Cathedral; between them, the Templo Mayor; to the south, the City Hall Palace, today the seat of the Mexico City government, and to the west a series of private buildings, including Mercaderes and Monte de Piedad. Walking here not only fills the hearts of all Mexicans with pride; it is also past and present, change and permanence, history and future.

The Bosque de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Forest) is, without a doubt, the most important urban park in Latin America and one of the most beautiful in the world. With 800 hectares (1,976.84 acres), it has some of the most important museums in the city – the “Castle” and the Anthropology Museum, for example – as well as lakes, fountains, a zoo and children’s playgrounds, among other attractions. The physiognomy of sections 2, 3 and 4 has been transformed in recent years, making it even more attractive. Section 2 invites you to visit the Los Pinos Cultural Complex with its cultural, gastronomic and recreational offerings, and to cross the Calzada Flotante to Aztlán, Parque Urbano, where there are amusement rides and places to eat. There is also the Cárcamo de Dolores, the Lago Menor, the Environmental Culture Center – to learn about the diversity of Chapultepec –, the Natural History Museum and towards sections 3 and 4, the new Cineteca, the Urban Culture Park and a good extension of reforested parkland. Chapultepec is as large and varied as those who visit it, an exponent of the diversity that characterizes this city.

Mexico City is one of the most important gastronomic destinations in the world. Here, we love to eat, the craving is always present and the imprint of the cuisines that make up the cultural heritage of what we now call Mexico is always present. The arrival of the Michelin Guide reaffirms our capital’s prestige on the global scene. With seven Michelin-starred restaurants and 20 Bib Gourmand distinctions, the metropolis is positioned as a culinary reference where tradition and innovation coexist in every bite. Exploring it through its gastronomy is an immersion in its history, culture and identity, hence street food is a fundamental pillar. Traditional markets such as San Juan or Coyoacán offer fresh products and typical snacks; on the other hand, restaurants such as Pujol, Quintonil, Sud 777 or Rosetta, among others, have laid the foundations of a scene characterized by creativity, exceptional service and a respect for local ingredients, outlining a promising future.

A new generation of urban parks in Iztapalapa are transforming urban space with community development centers that promote social welfare and environmental recovery: they are the Utopias. The one in Meyehualco, for example, stands out as a meeting point that offers free access to recreational, educational and sports spaces. Its infrastructure promotes learning and environmental conservation, in addition to providing experiences that facilitate urban regeneration and social cohesion. Among its attractions are a sports area with an Olympic-size swimming pool and skatepark; the Water Museum, which raises awareness of the city’s water challenges and the importance of responsible consumption, as well as an ecological park with wetlands and restorative gardens, a dinosaur exhibit with life-size sculptures, and workshops for children and adults. In addition to strengthening the sense of belonging, the Utopias are a biocultural tourism alternative that enriches and diversifies Mexico City’s tourism offer.

The Magdalena River, the only living body of water in the city, rises among pine and oyamel forests. It is located in Los Dinamos National Park, named after the four generators installed in the nineteenth century to supply energy to the textile and paper mills that existed in the south of the capital. The place is ideal for a wide variety of outdoor sports; for example, in its more than 2,000 hectares (over 4,942.108 acres) there are 26 kilometers (16.16 miles) of trails for biking or hiking of all levels. The most demanding trails are found in the 3rd and 4th Dinamos, as well as the viewpoints of La Coconetla and Puerta del Cielo, while the 1st and 2nd Dinamos have more infrastructure and amenities for children and the elderly. In its walls and ravines you can also practice climbing, rappel and go up the Via Ferrata, a marine staircase embedded in rock. It is worth going there for an early morning walk listening to your footsteps, the murmur of the river and the birds singing.

The Mexican capital has established itself as a safe and friendly destination for the LGBTTTI community, garnering international recognition and certifications that place it as a symbol of inclusion and freedom. Bars, clubs and cultural spaces dedicated to the expression of diversity in the Zona Rosa stand out, as well as the Plaza de la Solidaridad and the Angel of Independence, iconic places that in June serve as the key point of the Pride Parade. Since its first edition in 1979, this event has grown to become one of the largest in Latin America, with an attendance that exceeds 250 thousand people, and not to mention events such as the International Queer Film Festival and the Lesbian Cultural Week, which enrich the offer for those seeking an authentic, inclusive and diverse experience. More than a tourist destination, Mexico City is an epicenter of expression, activism and celebration of diversity where the LGBTTTI community can enjoy without restrictions.

Boarding one of the Cable Bus cabins for the first time, in any of its three lines, is like getting on an amusement ride. A few seconds after the door closes, you think you might fall into the void when the gondola leaves the platform, but it is quite the opposite: at that moment the trip begins and you will see the city from a new perspective. All the lines have their own appeal; Line 1, which runs between Cuautepec and Indios Verdes, offers views of the Sierra de Guadalupe Natural Protected Area. Line 2 is a journey through Iztapalapa, from Constitución de 1917 to Santa Martha; it is also the second longest line in the world, and a showcase to enjoy dozens of murals painted on roofs and housetops in a fabulous open gallery. Line 3 runs through Chapultepec’s sections 2, 3 and 4, where the vaults of the National Museum of History with the work of Pedro Friedeberg stand out, as well as different attractions of this fabulous park. When you arrive at your destination, you will probably want to do it again because from the top, everything always looks different.

Xochimilco is unique in the world. When the mist rises in the morning over the canals, you can make out the silhouettes of canoes and farmers working the land, sowing and harvesting in the chinampas. You can also hear the birds singing, the quacking of ducks and herons, and the splashing of oars submerging in the water. This district, located southeast of the city, is of invaluable worth for its historical, agricultural, ecological and cultural importance, which is why it is a World Heritage Site since 1987, and its chinampas, an agricultural remnant of the pre-Hispanic past, in which all kinds of vegetables are grown. But, Xochimilco is also a place for fun and recreation. There are places to ride bicycles, paddle boats or kayaks, watch the large number of birds that nest everywhere and tour its canals flanked by ahuejotes, trees endemic to the area, aboard a colorful and festive trajinera.

Every day, thousands of pilgrims arrive at the Basilica of Santa Maria de Guadalupe full of prayers and gratitude. At the feet of “Mexico’s Patroness” they surrender, turn their gaze towards the tilma where the Virgin is and murmur their prayers. Devotion is moving and the “Morenita del Tepeyac” is loved all over the world, which is why her sanctuary is the second most visited in the world. To her festivity, on December 12, millions come with all kinds of gifts, from flowers and candles to professional degrees, hair or altarpieces accompanied by the singing of mariachis. “La Villa” is also a devotional museum, here you will find the old Basilica – built at the end of the XVII century –, the Pocito and Juramentos chapels, the Marian Museum, the Mestizaje Park and the Tepeyac Garden, among others. Visiting it does not leave you indifferent, it even makes you think that gratitude and faith are precious gifts, beyond any creed.

With an offer that encompasses tradition, culture, sports and entertainment, the Day of the Dead Week has become one of the most important festivities in Mexico City. In the last days of October and the first days of November, the capital is a kaleidoscope of traditional rituals – such as the ofrendas in the Mixquic Cemetery in Tláhuac – and contemporary manifestations or world-class events such as the Catrinas Parade and the International Day of the Dead Parade. There is also the Mexico City Grand Prix, which since its return to the city, in 2015, has been recognized as the Best Formula 1 Event of the Year on multiple occasions. The combination of culture, sports and festivities makes this period one of the most dynamic and attractive on the calendar, demonstrating how culture evolves, nurtured by monumental offerings in public spaces such as the Zocalo and Bosque de Chapultepec, events such as the representation of La Llorona in the canals of Xochimilco, or night tours in historic cemeteries such as the San Fernando Pantheon.
